1. Be mindful of your food choices.
The “diabetic diet” can seem ominous and confusing to people suffering from diabetes. If your facing diabetes there are many messages that can confuse any diabetic.

Some of the things you may hear:

  • Don’t eat sugar,
  • Count your carbohydrates,
  • Watch out for high glycemic index foods,
  • Eat good fat,
  • Limit bad fat,
  • Eat more fiber!

Diabetes can be controlled with a proper diet and working with a doctor that understands this.

When discussing the effects of carbohydrates, protein and fat on blood sugar, portion control will help control blood glucose. One hundred percent of the carbohydrates you eat daily turn into sugar within a few hours of eating.

Carbohydrates are any starch, fruit, milk, yogurt or sweet that you eat. Fortunately you don’t have to avoid these foods, but be aware of your portions. Basically, if your craving it – you should exercise restraint and try something else.

2. Exercise
The purpose of glucose in the bloodstream (blood sugar) is to provide energy.

Physical work requires energy, it helps you “use up” your blood sugar. Hard work and exercise also supports your blood pressure, improve circulation, decrease stress, improve sleep and aid in digestion.

Doctors recommend two hours of exercise per week to promote and maintain a healthy weight. This is roughly 40 minutes 4 times per week which you can break into smaller bits. 30 minutes of exercise that gets your heart pumping fast is recommended. If your able – just walk quickly around the block or in a mall for 30 minutes or until you feel you had enough. Don’t over do it or your muscles may be very sore the next day. Gradually work up to a healthy time limit.

Choose a time approximately one hour after your meal so that you will be at peak energy.

This will help to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

3. Reduce Stress
If something has you upset – try to do something that can help you relax. You might try exercise, spending time with friends, meditation/prayer, or replace negative thoughts with positive ones.

Mental do whatever you need to feel centered, calm and happy again.

4. Cut Back on Alcohol
Alcohol consumption can drop blood sugar to dangerous levels for up to 24 hours after you finish your last drink because the liver has to work to remove the alcohol from the blood instead of regulating blood sugar.

5. Log Your Progress As You Supplement Your Health

Yes, this is something many people, unfortunately don’t do as a habit.


Keeping a detailed daily log can help you track what affects glucose levels. That log can include:
 Taking BeLiv, Insulin and other medications
 Foods, especially carbs – this will help you lose weight
 Physical activity
 Sleep, stress & illness

After a week or so, check to see if you notice any patterns.
